Wonderful Time in Montrose

We had arrived in Montrose in my last post and while having HH the moon made a great appearance.

It had been over 2 years since we'd been in this area, and it was then when we discovered a fantastic taco place called GNAR in Ridgway.  We definitely wanted to see if they still had it, and oh wow, they sure did, amazing food.  But first we washed the motorhome and truck, as they were absolutely filthy.  Washing is definitely one of the challenges of full timing since so few places will allow it.

Fabulous beans

Korean beef and pork belly

Pork belly, chicken thigh, and ahi tuna!

After our wonderful lunch we took a drive into Ouray just to check things out.  Then we followed up the day with awesome rack of lamb.

One of our absolute favorite things to do while in Montrose is to drive the Last Dollar Road, it is 21 miles, scenic, sometimes very rough, it was, and has fabulous overlooks and views.  It runs from just south of Ridgway to near the entrance to Telluride, if you're in the area it is a must do.  But first we stopped for lunch in Ridgway at the True Grit Cafe, pretty darn good.

Fried catfish for me

Then on to the drive.

We brought coffee along and started looking a good place to stop out of the wind, in the sun, with a view, and by ourselves.  We found it.

It was so perfect, we decided to have a cigar as well

The aspens were popping.

It was a great day in which we were blessed with beautiful weather.

So the next day we planned a picnic on another loop we so enjoy, into Silver Jack Reservoir, empty right now, from near Cameron, and then up and over Owl Creek Pass to come out just north of Ridgway and back.  We got another gorgeous day!

Our not so shabby lunch spot:-)

And how bout this guy on high alert?

We had some rainy and windy weather forecast for the next day, so on our walk, we took another shot right from our campground before it moved in.

Jan made a stir fry that evening as it was too windy to even go outside for HH.

And in came the rain, all day long, so we opted to go out to lunch at another place we like, Camp Robber, in Montrose and stop at the store on the way back.  We also decided to extend one day to let the weather clear as we were headed for our "secret" boon docking spot which required us to go through a massive amount of construction on Hwy 50, and up and over Slumgullion Pass, 11,530', so we wanted things to dry up first.

Shrimp quesadillas

Fish tacos

And by evening when the rain was beginning to stop, we could see snow in the higher elevations.

So since we had extended a day, we just had to go back to GNAR for some more tacos, yes, they are that good!
Ahi and Chinese pulled pork

Ahi, shrimp, pulled pork

And once we got farther south near Ridgway, we could see the snow had been pretty substantial and gorgeous!

That brought our time in Montrose to a close, from here we're on to our "secret" spot, then to Durango for a week.  TTYL
