Into Anchorage

We left quite awhile after Tom, about 0930am as we only were going about 140 miles to the Sourdough Creek Campground, a BLM facility north of Glennallen.  We had a good drive right up until we turned north on the Richardson Highway to go to the campground, then we encountered 19 miles of insanely frost heaved road that seemed to take longer than the entire trip!  But we nestled into our sites, and Jan had read about a roadhouse just up the road, so we all hiked over to the Sourdough Roadhouse for a very unusual treat for all of us, homemade pie à la mode!  We had apple, blueberry, and blackberry which were delicious, but the real kick was talking with the owners.  What a hoot!  He then showed us a shortcut back to the campground that we probably shouldn't have taken since we were all full of pie and ice cream, that cut about 1/2 mile off our walk.

Up bright and early, funny since the sun comes up at about 0330, and sets about midnight, and really never goes down, bright and early is what it always is.  Off we went back down the terrible 19 miles to hook back up with the Glenn Highway for our 200 mile trip to Anchorage, and what a beautiful day!  As we turned on the Glenn we were faced with an incredible view of the Wrangell Mountains.

After that the route really got beautiful!  It just got better and better as we got closer to Anchorage.  Karen made a comment that she really thought mountains were mountains, but found they were all different, and these were magnificent!  And not only mountains, but glaciers as well.

Then as the signs were warning of 25 miles of narrow winding road ahead we pulled over at an incredible spot for lunch.

Then as if on cue we were treated to a 4th of July flyby!
How bout that?
And on into Anchorage.  We are now shoehorned into our sites, but are getting a lot done.  First, we had to go get Karen's truck at the airport, and she suggested we stop and have a drink at the Millennium Hotel right on Lake Spenard which is the seaplane center in Anchorage.  So we sat outside on a beautiful day, enjoying our drinks, watching seaplanes come and go, it was so nice we just stayed for dinner!

The next day Jan and Karen went to resupply after emptying our refrigerators and freezers and did some other errands.  I went off to meet a friend, Keith for a great lunch and a fantastic visit.  Karen took us out to dinner with her friends' Don and Sandy for a very pleasant evening and great food.  And now this morning, after all the beautiful warm weather, we are winding down in the drizzle and rain.  It will be nice to have a slow day.
