After our hike we decided to have a quiet day. Jan took off early to do some grocery shopping while I did some paperwork. Then we decided to go to the San Marcos Cafe for lunch. We heard a lot about it. It is a small eclectic restaurant on the end of an operating feed store, and in the midst of a "zoo". There are peacocks and turkeys and chickens and babies running all around. But we talked to a bunch of people that said it was delicious. And it took a lot of persuasion to forgo our fav place, "The Pantry Restaurant". Well, 50-50, Jan's green chili stew and side of guacamole was delicious, and my chicken enchilada was umm, well, okay, I guess. Checked off that square.
After lunch we went and played tourist for awhile. Walked around the downtown, window shopped, went into a neat olive oil and balsamic vinegar store Sandra had told us about, peered at a lot of jewelry and leather goods. Had a nice time. One big disappointment, there is a gallery, or I guess I should say there was a gallery that we always made sure we visited each time we went to Santa Fe. It had beautiful stuff, paintings, sculptures, etc. But what always stuck out was there was a sculptor working on a clay model that he was going to make a bronze out of. You could talk to him, ask questions, and just marvel at the talent and detail he was able to bring to the clay and then the bronze. It's gone! Not the building, that has been taken over by another business, but the original is gone, and we don't even know what the name of it was, or whether they just moved or went away. Need to do some research.
Also looking around we noticed it seemed real quiet in town, usually it is bustling, but not today. We talked to a couple store owners and they confirmed it was a little too quiet, they thought last year was bad, but this year was shaping up worse. Time will tell.

That gallery was there the last time we went, a few months ago. I'm surprised to hear its gone! I find the square disappointing, some of the stores we really liked are gone or have changed. I'm sure most of it is due to the economy.
Our friend Sandra did some research and found that theSage Creek Gallery did move to 421 Canyon Road. Good to hear they moved and didn't go out of business. Yeah, it was surprisingly quiet this year!
