Goodbye To Maine For A Month, We'll Be Back:-)

First of all I want to say we did make homemade lobster rolls with the lobster we bought steamed and cleaned ourselves, and man, they were good!  Watch out Red's.

Toasted New England hot dog bun with a touch of mayo inside,
then lobster with a drizzle of melted butter on top.
Delishiocious!!

We did end up changing our plans, again, and decided not to go north when Karen and Tom left.  It was forecast to rain over an inch and the campground we were heading to in northern Maine was all grass, and we were afraid of getting stuck, so we extended 2 nights in Eastport instead.  We did have to move sites up off the water but the views weren't too shabby.

We have made our way over to Brownfield, ME near the NH border to a campground on the Saco River.  We had 2 nights here, a nice small place with huge sites, lot of privacy, and quiet and dark, On The Saco Family Campground.

So yesterday we were talking about what we wanted to do, knowing we wanted to go over and see Sebago Lake, and since I had Google open I mentioned to Jan we were only a little over an hour from Billy's Chowder House in Wells, she countered and said, OMG, it would be on a Wednesday.............$1 oyster day!!  That sealed it and just like that we knew what we were going to do.  It was a pretty drive down and we had an awesome lunch, perfection really.  Lucious oysters on the half shell, awesome seafood stew, crammed full of fish, and delicious onion rings.

Then while at lunch Jan had another epiphany, let's run up to Scarborough to that terrific seafood market before we head to Sebago, why not?  So we did and bought swordfish, flounder, and cod.  That way we'll be eating fish all the way to Buffalo and back:-)  Then back up around Sebago, looks to be a very pretty, huge lake, then back for our last night, so this morning we leave to go to Buffalo through White River Junction.  But like I say, watch out Maine, we'll be back in a month, we'll miss you.

Welcome To Our New Site on the Water

We moved farther downeast to Eastport, ME to a campground we had never stayed at before, Seaview, and are now once again parked right on the water with awesome views and huge tides.  It is a fantastic spot!  Once parked we got settled in to enjoy the stellar views and, of course, solve some more of the world's problems.

We were treated to an incredible show as the sun went down.

Way out here on the eastern point of America the sun rises early, 4:45am, but it is light long before that, reminds of us being up in Alaska, and since we are early risers anyway, we have really enjoyed the early light.  This is the view that welcomed us at 5:15am.

We wanted to do some exploring, some walking, and what else?  Some eating, obviously.  The campground suggested a restaurant just up the road so we went there for lunch.  We had enormous bowls of seafood chowder and fish chowder, but Tom ordered an amazing lobster pizza, sounds weird, but we all got a taste and it was truly delicious!

Hard to tell from this picture how big this bowl really is,
none of the 3 of us could finish it all:-)

Now later this summer after our son Jason and Joanne's wedding we plan to return to Maine and were planning on staying at another campground near Lubec.  Lubec is about 3 miles away as the crow flies, but is 38 miles by road, but we wanted to go check it out, especially since we were so pleased with the campground here.  So we set off on a nice sightseeing road trip which had to include lunch, meanwhile Karen and Tom went to see the West Quoddy Lighthouse, the easternmost point in the US.  We had visited it previously on another trip.  We ended up making a circle around to Machias where we had an awesome lunch at Helen's, then over to check out the other campground and drive through Lubec.

A broiled haddock sandwich

Fantastic onion rings

Incredible haddock chowder with lobster!

It was a worthwhile trip, as we determined as nice as the other campground was, it really couldn't compare to where we are staying now.  So we were able to change our reservation and we plan to come back here instead on our travels through later in the summer.

Karen and Tom on the left, us on the right

Both Lubec and Eastport are tiny towns that look right over the water at Canada, only about 1000 people in each.

In fact this lighthouse is on Campobello Island in Canada across from Lubec.

Jan went out and took advantage of a wonderful sunrise to get these beautiful pictures.

So we are sitting here hunkered down in the rain today, which as it turns out is going to be our last day together, Karen and Tom will head south from here while Jan and I head farther north.  We said farewell over drinks and dinner at Karen and Tom's our last night. It has been a great time traveling along together for these 5 weeks.

Adios guys

PS: We picked up a couple lobsters for our homemade lobster rolls for lunch tomorrow:-)

Going to be lunch!

The Week Flew By!

Of course part of that is because we only had 3 nice days of weather in our week stay.  But no complaints, even a rainy and windy day sitting right on the water is just fine with us.  We took one of the rainy days and made an errand run to Bangor, and, of course, while we were there had to go to lunch:-)  We found a very nice place called Timber, kind of upscale and very good.

My happy camper

Delicious seafood chowder

An awesome pesto personal pizza

And halibut tacos

It continued to rain most of the night and the next day as well, but even so our view right from our site was spectacular.

We made our own seafood dinner that night, scallops.

It was still drizzly and raining, so after lunch we went exploring for lobsters and ended up in Northeast Harbor.

This rainy night Jan made all of us a roasted pork dinner, have to have a break from seafood every so often, at least once a month:-)

We were then blessed with 3 beautiful days in a row, so Jan and I left early, 05:45am to run down into Acadia to do the around Jordan Pond hike, one of our favorites.  It was a gorgeous day!

The Bubbles in the background

It's a wonderful 3+ mile hike, especially first thing in the morning when it is quiet and uncrowded.  An added bonus is you get to hear and see the loons.

On the way back we saw 2 cruise ships off Bar Harbor.

After lunch back at our site, we took off for Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor.

The view from our site never got old

The next day dawned pretty and bright, so first thing, Karen and I went to a lobster pound and picked up our live lobsters for our cookout that night.  And after lunch Jan and I took coffee and headed over to Schoodic Point, the other part of Acadia, less traveled and visited.

Then for our feast.  We cooked the lobsters, Karen made potato salad, and Jan cooked corn on the cob, but obviously the stars were the lobsters and man, were they good!

Let the feast begin!

Clean plates

Lobster's revenge

Then after dinner, the evening just got better and better.

Yesterday, our last pretty day before more forecast rain, Karen and Tom went for a schooner ride and Jan and I went to Bagaduce Lunch, one of our favorites for lunch.  A very unassuming shack along the river with dynamite food.  We sat out, splurged on whole belly clams, scallops, and onion rings.  Fantastic!

So tomorrow we all move all the way east to Eastport, the point of Maine for several days.  Good bye to our awesome sites on the water.
