Yesterday we had a huge surprise. We had a wonderful visit with some old friends from Maine, Bruce and Cathie. He was a fellow Delta pilot that I flew with many years ago. We had a great time catching up with all the things happening in our lives. They were passing through, actually went way out of their way to see us, on their way from Phoenix back to Maine. They are in the middle of a huge move to relocate to Phoenix where they have been wanting to go for some time. Things have come together for them to make it possible. It was fun discussing all the ramifications of a big move and a downsize in home size and all the items that need to be taken care of. Bruce was my hero in that he retired early and has had a very successful, full retirement, in fact, he is now a published author!
One challenge to a nomadic lifestyle like ours is seeing friends, on one hand you are able to visit when you go by, but on the other hand, you could be out of their area for extended periods and not be able to see each other. We figured out it has been 7 years since we last saw Bruce and Cathie face to face! Hopefully with their move to Phoenix and our being out west more and more we'll be able to see a lot more of them.
We have been poking around the Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences area and we have to admit if you don't have a boat and don't want to get into any water sports, there isn't much here. There doesn't seem to be any downtown in Elephant Butte, and the downtown area in T or C is cute, but it's pretty quiet, at least on a weekday. We found out that on the weekends, especially holiday weekends this area swells to over 100,000 people drawn by the lake! Makes it one of the largest cities in New Mexico! We are expecting our campground which is only about 1/3 full right now to fill up completely this evening. Then we get to escape the crowds tomorrow as we work our way over to Silver City, NM.
