Watch out lobsters, here we come!

We got in early to our campground in Boothbay for the Memorial Day weekend, and it got pretty crowded although we were very surprised the entire campground did not fill up.  Now I have to admit the weather wasn't exactly cooperative, rained one whole day and was quite chilly the entire weekend.  As I said we've been to Shore Hills many times over the years and it was nice to see some improvements since our last visit, all paved interior roads now.

Now the first thing we had to do while in Boothbay was to go to Red's Eats in Wiscasset.  We think they have the best and it happens to be the biggest lobster roll, period.  Now they open at 11:30, and it is usually packed, and since it is a tiny place we decided to go at 11:00 to beat the crowd, even if it was on Friday ahead of the launch of the season, Memorial Day.  We were number 8 in line!  By the time they opened the window there were at least 30 people in line.  We made it to the window, they are the friendliest people, we had decided to also get some scallops as we had heard they were incredible as well.  When I ordered and mentioned the scallops, she stopped, smiled, and said, "I have to warn you.  If you get the scallops it will ruin you from ever eating them anywhere else again."  I laughed and said, "We'll see."  They only take cash, so we were ready, but they conveniently have an ATM machine close by for those that don't know.

Now the lobster was incredible, but true to her word, the scallops were in a class all by themselves.  The batter accentuated the taste not took away from it and they were just barely cooked, and just melted in your mouth, absolutely amazing.  I was going to go back and tell her she was right, but figured the 50 people in line would think I was trying to cut in so I didn't.  Just so you don't think we're the only crazy ones, as we were driving back from an errand we passed Red's in the pouring rain at 2 in the afternoon and this is what we saw!

After Red's, we wanted to go to another famous lobster roll place called Five Islands Lobster Company.  Unfortunately it was another rainy day, and they were on a very limited menu until June 23rd.  We got there close to opening time and found ourselves about 7 in line in the rain.  They only have a small covered area to eat so we had our lunch in the truck.  It was fine as Five Islands is one of the most picturesque spots on the Maine coast even in the rain.

 One important goal we had while in Boothbay was to go have lunch at the Red Barn in Augusta.  Our friends Bob and Harlean took us there in 2015 when we came through and we had the most amazing seafood stew, and we wanted to go for a repeat and if it was as good as we remembered we wanted to get a couple quarts to go.  We were pleased to find out not only Bob and Harlean met us but also, Scott and Sue.  It was so good to see some of our Florida/Maine friends, unfortunately Sue couldn't join us for lunch but the rest of us gave it a go.  We can report the seafood stew was just as good as we thought, it truly is superlative, all seafood no filler or potatoes even!

Driving around the area is so scenic and quiet right now.  The hoards of summer visitors aren't here yet.  So with so much food we went to have a afternoon coffee and found a nice little spot.

I hope you're not too bored with all the food talk, almost sounds like a food blog, doesn't it?  But I'm warning you there is lots more to come before we get back to RVing and traveling:-)

We finally got a nice day and went into Boothbay Harbor to walk around, window shop and.......wait for it, eat some more.

So on our last morning in Boothbay our crazy fur ball, Bert decides to get us up at 4am, yes 4am.  The sun comes up very early this far east and we think it has messed up his internal clock, so we end up paying.  So by 8:30am, we have read all our email, the newspaper, had breakfast, walked, and cleaned up, and decided to make some more coffee and go find a nice spot to savor it by the water before we had to leave for Belfast.

So now we are just north of Belfast at a waterfront campground, The Moorings.  It is on the water and has fantastic views, although the rest of the place is lacking, but it is expensive.  Glad we came, won't be back.
